Château Falfas Côtes de Bourg '14

Château Falfas Côtes de Bourg '14

Welcome to the Alternative Bordeaux! A place where splendid, old school wines made with low-intervention methods and excellent farming is found for a little money! In this same bizarro universe exists previous features this year such as Peybonhomme, Clos du Jaugueyron and Moulin de Tricot.

Today we introduce the wines of Chateau Falfas to our Perman Wine family! Veronique Cochran founded the estate in 1988, coming from Saumur in the Loire Valley where her father was a pioneering biodynamic consultant working with such names as DRC, Huet and Roches Neuves. With this early influence, she employed biodynamically techniques since the beginning, gaining certification in 1989—remarkably early in France, much less Bordeaux where exceptional farming is very much the exception to the rule.

Located in the relatively obscure Côtes de Bourg appellation, a haven for independent and family owned estates situated on the right bank at the confluence of the Dordogne and Garrone rivers. The climate here is fairly mild and well regulated by the clay-limestone soil—certainly one reason the wines have gained in prominence while temperatures rise in the region—it is still possible to make classically balanced wines here.

The flagship wine of the estate is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec aged a year in barrels of which roughly a third are new. Veronique employs a fairly length maceration of up to a month which gives the tannins a spicy and persistent presence in this otherwise lifted wine despite its full body. You could almost declare this Springtime Bordeaux with the extremely pleasant and well situated herbaceousness that frames the rich black cherry, plums and chalkiness perfectly. The wine is open, but improves over an evening open, a good sign this is a nice candidate to tuck a few extra bottles away to come back to over the next few years. Drink this alongside a Côte de boeuf served with Asparagus and Hollandaise sauce and you’ll be sure to be as charmed as we are by Veronique and Falfas!
