One of the oldest and most celebrated domaines in Savennières, Chateau d'Épiré is rich in history, not only for its fabulous architectural rendition of the Petit Trianon of Versailles, but most especially for its exquisite wines. Savennières is situated just southwest of Angers, on the north bank of the Loire River. The domaine itself has been in the Bizard family continuously since the 17th century, and the most recent owners and caretakers of the land are Monsieur and Madame Luc Bizard. They own 11 hectares, 9 of which are entirely dedicated to the cultivation of Pineau de la Loire, known today as Chenin Blanc.
Savennières is an area known for yielding a fascinating expression of Pineau, with lively acidity and pronounced minerality in youth, before developing a striking range of aromas with age. The fruit for this 2021 Savennières is harvested from an 8.5-hectare vineyard planted with vines that average 35 years in age, on schist soils. The juice rests for 24 hours before being racked into stainless steel vats for fermentation.
This is a lovely young Savennières to enjoy now, with notes of yellow apple, pear, and stone fruit, and a round mouthfeel leading to a stony, mouthwatering finish. Try it with soft-ripened cheeses, grilled shellfish and vegetables, or pork dumplings. (Background info courtesy of Kermit Lynch)
