Charvin "Le Poutet" Côtes du Rhône '21
Founded in 1851, Domaine Charvin is run by sixth-generation Laurent Charvin and comprises about eight hectares of vineyards, spread throughout the northwestern portion of the appellation in the lieux-dits Maucoil, L’Arnesque, and Cabrières. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2014.
Charvin is most famous for its consistently exceptional Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge, and this fresh, bright Côtes du Rhône is another way to enjoy the producer’s vibrant style, and with less aging required. Côtes du Rhône wines are typically a blend primarily of the three red grapes Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, though a winemaker can choose from among more than twenty. This bottle is a blend of 81% Grenache, 7% Mourvèdre, 7% Syrah, and 5% Carignan, keeping the focus on Grenache and balancing it with the other varieties.
Winemaking at Charvin is extremely traditional, and Laurent focuses on making wines with balance and freshness. The 2021 rouge is made with whole-bunch fermentation and was matured in concrete vat for 18 months. The nose shows light notes of raspberry, mulberry, and blackberry, along with a hint of garrigue, dried flowers, and cracked pepper. On the palate, it is medium bodied, with moderate yet firm tannins and acidity, and a polished, refreshing finish. This wine is nimble throughout a meal, whether with charcuterie, fish, gamey meats, poultry, or vegetable dishes.
