Ca' Mongròss "La Regina" Barbera d'Asti Superiore '20
I’m always getting asked about what my favorite wines are, the bottles that I drink on a regular basis. It’s a difficult question to answer. After all, I got into the wine business because I love and respect a wide range of styles. Yet always near the top of my list is Barbera. One of the prominent grape varieties of Piedmont, in northwestern Italy, there is a huge diversity of style within the region. But one thing is always true about Barbera: it’s fun to drink. Yes, there is complexity and the ability to age, but I'm a sucker for its beautiful fruit, freshness, and versatility to pair with a wide range of food.
I’m really excited to have you try this fantastic Barbera from Agricola Ferraris, a top producer in the Monferrato hills. Luca Ferraris has become best known for his work with the local Ruchè grape variety. His family, longtime farmers in the area, previously sold their fruit to the cooperative. He changed that in the year 2000, and his work quickly became noticed. He built a new cellar in 2009, and since that time he has become one of the very best producers in Monferrato.
“La Regina” is one of three Barberas produced by Luca. The fruit comes from the area of Montegrosso d’Asti, situated just south of the village of Asti. The soil here is a mixture of limestone, clay, and marl and lies at around 200-230 meters above sea level. The Barbera is hand harvested, with alcoholic fermentation in 54-hectoliter French oak barrels, and malolactic in 500-liter French tonneaux. It is aged in the same-sized vessel for 18 months before being bottled.
This is a rich, heady style of Barbera, with beautiful opulence, a mixture of dark cherry and plum notes. Super silky on the palate, it fills the mouth with beautiful fruit and balsamic notes, and finishes with length and freshness. This is the perfect Barbera to stand up to some of your favorite grilled meats, from steaks to lamb chops. A great value.
