Ca' del Baio "BricdelBaio" Langhe Nebbiolo '19

Ca' del Baio "BricdelBaio" Langhe Nebbiolo '19

If you look on your calendar, you may notice that tomorrow is the official start of fall.

Our calendar here at Perman Wine Selections is just a little bit different. For us, tomorrow is the official start of Nebbiolo season. That’s because there is almost no better wine to drink as the weather cools down than the “King” of Italian varietals.

Barolo and Barbaresco aren’t known for being everyday wines. Their price point often lends itself to more of a “special occasion” type wine. That is why it is important to not overlook the Langhe Nebbiolo category, a wine that most producers in the aforementioned appellations include in their lineup.

Ca’ del Baio is one of the names you need to know in the Barbaresco region. The history of the Grasso family in Treiso goes way back to 1870. By 1921, the family began to plant vines and produce small quantities of wine. The current head of the Grasso family, Giulio was born in 1959 and eventually took over from his father Ernesto. He is still actively involved along with his wife, Luciana, and their three dynamic daughters, Paola, Valentina, and Federica.

Ca’ del Baio has the privilege of owning some top-notch single vineyards in Barbaresco. The list of five includes Asili, Pora, Vallegrande, Marcarini, and Ferrere. Much of the fruit from these vineyards forms the basis for their single-vineyard wines. Yet some of the young vines go into another wine.

The Grasso’s produced two Langhe Nebbiolo wines, an everyday one produced from several young vineyards and this wine, called “BricdelBaio.” This incorporates the fruit from several of those top single vineyards, with an average vine age of just under 20 years old. In my humble opinion, it represents one of the very best quality Langhe Nebbiolo wines in all of Piedmont.

The 2019 is really a beautiful wine, with aromas of spiced strawberry jam, fennel frond, and flowers. It is medium bodied, with a huge burst of tart cherry, anise, and cracked pepper notes. The tannins are ripe and well incorporated. Ultimately the wines of Piedmont are ones to enjoy with food. So get those red wine braised short rib recipes out, and enjoy. A fantastic value!
