Brigaldara Valpolicella '21
Valpolicella, north of the city of Verona, in Veneto, is perhaps best known as an area that produces the rich style of red wine called Amarone, but it also produces a more classic style of red, known simply as Valpolicella. This is an everyday, fresh style, the kind of wine you might reach for when you are thinking of drinking, say, Pinot Noir or Gamay.
The Brigaldara estate was purchased by Renzo Cesari in 1928, with 47 of its 120 acres planted with vines, and the rest covered with olive groves, crops, pastures, and woods. Since the 1980s, Brigaldara has been run by Renzo’s grandson Stefano, in collaboration with the enologist Roberto Ferrarini, known for his work in the Valpolicella area. Their focus is on the richness and diversity of the vineyards, and how best to express that in the Brigaldara wines.
This bottle from Brigaldara is a perfect option for a summer red. The 2021 Valpolicella is a blend of Corvina (55%), Corvinone (25%), and Rondinella (20%). The fruit comes from two vineyards planted 40–50 years ago. The grapes are hand-harvested, and the fermentation is carried out at a moderate temperature to preserve the fresh and delicate aromas of the fruit. The wine is aged for six months in stainless steel. On the nose, the wine offers aromas of red cherry, redcurrant, blackberry, herbs, and candied violet. Medium bodied, it’s juicy and lively on the palate, with floral and red berry flavors, fine tannins, and elevated acidity. Try it with everyday foods, from pizza and burgers to grilled vegetables and roasted chicken.
