    Baudry Chinon "Les Granges" '20

Lovers of Cabernet Franc, and Loire Valley reds in general, will want to pay attention to this offering. Today we’re featuring one our favorite cuvées of Chinon from one of the area’s most esteemed producers, Domaine Bernard Baudry. Bernard founded his namesake estate in the early 1980s with a couple inherited hectares. After graduating from the Lycée de Beaune, he quickly rose to prominence in the appellation for precise, textured Chinon. Today, Bernard is technically retired (vignerons never really retire) and his son Matthieu, who has been making wine with his father since 2000, has taken over as head vigneron.

The domaine makes a total of eight different wines: one rosé, two whites, and five reds. Each wine comes from different soil, ie, terroir, and is distinctly reflective of its vineyard site. Today’s wine, “Les Granges,” comes from the estate’s young vines (planted in 1985 and 1988) and is meant to be drunk young. After harvest, the grapes are destemmed, fermented, and aged in cement tanks, producing a wine that is fresh and textured, with pleasant acidity and medium tannins—the perfect combination for early consumption. In the glass, the 2020 “Les Granges” is a dark ruby red, with initial aromas of smoky red fruits and a hint of green bell pepper, that herbaceous note that we so love in Chinon. On the palate it is wonderfully complex and layered, though not in a heavy way; it’s actually quite elegant and shows a fantastic balance of earth and fruit. The wine is delicious on its own and also pairs wonderfully with lamb chops and scalloped potatoes. This is another knockout from Domaine Baudry!
